Tip 5: Asking Good Questions

Two Major Types of Questions

1. Information Questions (getting facts/data)
-Where did you grow up?
-Tell me more about...

2. Questions about experience (what people are thinking or feeling)
-What did it feel like to grow up there?
-Things that draw out what their experience is or was.

Why is this important?

1. It helps you to get to know another person.

2. It shows interest and communicates care

3. It helps others to tell their story, which allows the group to become more deeply connected

4. It provides answers, dialogue and even helps the person understand themselves better too.

Focus on asking questions that elicit information from people and probes feelings.
